Not Quite Dead Survival Guide - Food, Loot, Crafting, Radiation

Quick answer

Use this survival guide as the hub for early food pressure, loot progression, crafting materials, radiation prep, combat caution, and exploration decisions in the current Early Access build.

Review record
Published: Last reviewed: Patch-sensitive facts are marked for recheck

Use this page as the broad Not Quite Dead: Open World Survival survival route before you jump into narrower pages. It connects first-run priorities, loot decisions, crafting material checks, radiation preparation, combat rechecks, and exploration pacing without turning unstable Early Access details into fixed tables.

Quick Answer

Start small: secure recovery supplies, keep enough stamina to leave a fight, collect basic loot and crafting materials, then push into riskier routes only after you know how to return. The September 4 updates changed weapon accuracy, zombie hitbox/collision, Plastic Scrap availability, explosive zombie placement, and enemy counts, so old advice about combat, loot scarcity, and enemy density should be rechecked before it shapes a long run.

Do not treat this page as a map, drop table, or stat sheet. Exact locations, rates, recipes, protection values, and weapon numbers still need current-build proof.

Push carefullyExplore military, remote, dangerous, bunker, or Prison routes only with a way out.Explosive zombie and enemy-density changes need live-build rechecks by area.

Food And Recovery

Food pressure is a routing problem. If supplies are low, shorten the loop and bank progress before entering dense zombie areas. A few useful recovery items can matter more than one risky objective because they let you recover from a bad pull, a missed shot, or a long return trip.

Use nearby low-risk containers first. If a route consumes more food or healing than it returns, treat that route as too early for your current gear.

Water And Thirst

Players may look for water or thirst guidance alongside food, but this page should not invent a water system, value, or route. If the current build shows thirst or water pressure in your session, record the build date, UI wording, item name, and where the resource was found before converting it into stable advice.

Until then, keep food, healing, stamina, and route length as the confirmed survival planning tools.

Loot Progression

Loot should answer a survival problem:

  1. Recovery items keep a run alive.
  2. Ammunition and weapons reduce forced melee risk.
  3. Crafting materials support base, gear, and upgrade planning.
  4. Vehicle and bunker-related items should be tested with build dates.
  5. Rare loot is only useful if you can leave with it.

Plastic Scrap deserves a current-build recheck because launch-window notes marked it easier to find. That is not the same as a verified container list, route, or drop rate.

Crafting Materials

Crafting materials should be tracked by source, not rumor. When a material matters, capture the build date, location type, source object or enemy, solo/co-op state, and whether the find repeated.

Avoid fixed recipe claims unless a current screenshot or repeated test supports them. If a material blocks progress, check whether the issue is scarcity, route danger, inventory planning, or using the material too early.

Combat And Weapons

The September 4 combat changes are good reasons to retest normal fights. Weapon accuracy and zombie hitbox/collision were marked improved, so older hit-registration complaints should not be repeated as current facts without a fresh report.

Still, improved combat does not replace basic survival habits:

  1. Fight one zombie at a time when possible.
  2. Move into open space before swinging or firing.
  3. Keep stamina for escape.
  4. Reload or heal only after creating distance.
  5. Upgrade weapons to solve a route problem, not to chase an unverified number.

Use Weapon Upgrades for U1 to U6 and Weapon Parts caveats.

Radiation

Radiation should be treated as prepared expedition content. Bring recovery supplies, verify gear is equipped, and make the first entry short. If radiation overlaps with military, remote, or dangerous zones, remember that explosive zombie placement and enemy density changed during the launch window.

Use Gas Mask And Radiation Guide before publishing or following exact gas mask location, durability, filter, or protection claims.

Exploration

Exploration works best as a loop, not a straight line into danger. Scout the edge of a risky area, leave while supplies are still healthy, and return only after you know the exit path.

Use this order when deciding where to go next:

Route typeGo whenStop when
Nearby containersYou need food, medicine, ammo, or basic materials.Zombies stack up or recovery items are running low.
BunkersYou have supplies and a reason to test the route.Radiation, enemies, or missing gear create multiple unknowns at once.
PrisonYou are prepared for a higher-risk run and current fix status has been checked.Performance, navigation, or enemy pressure looks different from the latest notes.
Co-opBoth players are on the same build and ready to verify progress.Host/client rewards, quest state, or item sync looks unclear.

Current-Build Recheck Rules

Treat these as review triggers:

  • A Steam update changes combat, loot, enemies, vehicles, Prison, or progression.
  • A guide older than two weeks makes a route, item, or system claim.
  • A page gives exact values without build-date evidence.
  • A community report conflicts with official patch notes.
  • A co-op issue might behave differently for host and client.

Source Notes

Checked on 2026-09-07 against the site review packet and source-dated launch-window Steam/SteamDB context already used by the current guide set. September 4 combat, hitbox, loot, explosive-zombie, and enemy-count changes are treated as recheck signals, not final stat data. Exact map routes, drop rates, crafting recipes, weapon values, gas mask details, and co-op behavior still need current-build verification.
